Weed Advent Calendar in NJ: What's Legal and How to Build One

A THC advent calendar can't legally be mailed or shipped to New Jersey. The legal path: build one from licensed products, with this day-by-day plan.

10 min read November 8, 2026 West Orange, NJ

The short answer

A THC advent calendar cannot legally be mailed or shipped to New Jersey. The only legal place to buy cannabis here is a licensed New Jersey dispensary, so the legal path is to buy from one and build the calendar yourself.

  • Shipping: USPS lists marijuana, medical or otherwise, as prohibited in domestic mail (USPS), and New Jersey says it is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines (CRC).
  • Hemp and THCA calendars: since April 13, 2026, New Jersey counts products over 0.4 mg of total THC per container as cannabis, and its hemp law bars selling hemp-derived products online (CRC hemp FAQ).
  • Ready-made calendars: legal only if a licensed New Jersey dispensary sells one. The Library's online menu listed none on November 8, 2026.
  • Building your own: legal for adults 21 and older. Keep each item in its original package or keep the receipt, stay within 1 ounce, take no payment, and give it for personal, non-business reasons.

Search for a weed advent calendar and the top results are Canadian sites and a Vermont store's how-to, with seed and hemp sellers further down. None of the leading pages we read tells an adult in New Jersey what this state allows.

This guide does. It sorts each kind of calendar into legal or not, lists the rules a homemade one has to follow, and gives you a door-by-door plan for December 2026, with low-dose guidance from New Jersey's Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC). Everything here is for adults 21 and older.

Why a THC Calendar Can't Be Shipped to New Jersey

The mail is closed to it. USPS lists “Marijuana (medical or otherwise)” among the items you can't send in the U.S. mail (USPS shipping restrictions). Hemp has its own line: products at or under a 0.3% THC limit can be mailed domestically only when the mailer complies with all applicable federal, state and local laws (Publication 52, section 453.37).

State lines are closed to it. New Jersey lets residents and visitors 21 and older buy at licensed dispensaries, but the CRC is plain about leaving: “It is still illegal to transport cannabis across statelines” (CRC).

The hemp route closed here in April. New Jersey's hemp law (P.L.2025, c.215, revised by P.L.2026, c.7) changed the definitions on April 13, 2026. Flower over 0.3% total THC or products over 0.4 mg of total THC per container are now legally cannabis, and apart from what the state's Hemp Farming Act authorizes, selling them without a Commission license is unlawful. Hemp drinks follow on November 14, 2026. The law also bars selling any hemp-derived product online (CRC hemp FAQ). Federal law is moving the same way: Congress delayed most of its new hemp definition, which includes a 0.4 mg per-container limit, until December 11, 2026 (Congressional Research Service). Our federal hemp guide has the details.

The CRC's warning covers every route above: “Purchasing cannabis from anywhere other than these locations is illegal and the safety of the purchased product cannot be guaranteed” (CRC).

The New Jersey Rules Your Calendar Has to Follow

Giving cannabis to another adult is legal here, within limits. These come from the CREAMM Act and the CRC.

  1. 1

Everything with THC comes from a licensed New Jersey store.

The state's protection applies when the item “was first obtained directly from a licensed cannabis retailer” or a licensed delivery service (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a).

  2. 2

Leave each item in its own package, or keep the receipt.

The same law says that source is shown by the item “being in its original packaging or by a sales slip, invoice, receipt, or other statement or memorandum.” Do both: don't decant anything into a pouch, and tape the receipt inside the lid.

  3. 3

Stay within 1 ounce, or the equivalent.

You may give up to 28.35 grams (1 ounce) to another adult (CRC). The check below shows how far under the limit this plan sits.

  4. 4

Give it only to an adult 21 or older.

Adults who give cannabis to anyone under the legal age face penalties too, not just stores (CRC).

  5. 5

    Take no money for it.

“You may not accept any form of payment or compensation for the gifted cannabis” (CRC). That rules out letting friends chip in or pay you back.

  6. 6

Keep it personal, not a company gift.

The transfer must be for “non-promotional, non-business purposes” (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a), so this is not a client or staff gift.

  7. 7

    It stays in New Jersey.

That includes taking it to family in another state (CRC).

  8. 8

Use it only where it's allowed.

Adults can generally use cannabis on private property, but property owners can limit it (CRC) and landlords may prohibit it (CRC), so ask your host first. State law bars smoking, vaping or aerosolizing cannabis in any public place, such as a street, sidewalk, park, playground, shopping area or parking lot, and in any indoor public place, even where tobacco smoking is permitted. The same law lets a hotel or motel allow it in up to 20 percent of its guest rooms, and lets apartment building owners and co-op corporations ban or regulate it, as can a condo association with the approval of a majority of all unit owners (N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a). You can also consume at licensed dispensaries with consumption areas, which can refuse cannabis you bring in yourself (CRC). For streets, parks, cars and hotels, see our guide to smoking weed in public in NJ.

The 1-ounce check for this plan

The CRC treats 1 ounce of flower, 4 grams of concentrate or vape oil, and 1,000 mg of edibles as equal, and its examples of mixed purchases add up the same way (CRC). Applying that arithmetic to the 24-door plan below:

The Day-by-Day Plan: 24 Doors or 12

December 1, 2026 is a Tuesday. Only 7 of the 24 doors hold THC, on Fridays, Saturdays and Christmas Eve. The others hold accessories, notes and small things to use. No door holds gummies, chocolate or other food, and the THC doors stay in their labeled packages.

A door is not a dose you have to take that day. Skip any you like. Building 12 doors instead? Start at door 13 on December 13; that version has 3 THC doors.

How to put it together

  1. 1

Buy the THC doors in one trip.

The whole list fits inside one New Jersey purchase. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.

  2. 2

Use plain numbered bags or tags.

Skip children's calendars, candy boxes and anything with cartoon characters. A drink needs a bigger door than a paper pocket, so use gift bags for the THC days.

  3. 3

    Leave everything in its package.

Put each item in its door still in the package it came in, then tape the receipt inside the lid.

  4. 4

    Label the outside.

Write “Adults 21+ only. Contains cannabis.” on the box.

  5. 5

    Lock it up.

Store the whole calendar locked and out of sight, and take out one door at a time.

  6. 6

    Hand it over in person.

Give it directly to an adult 21 or older, in New Jersey, for personal, non-business reasons, with no payment.

How Much THC Goes Behind a Door

The CRC's own advice is “Start low. Go slow.” It says that if you are new to cannabis or have not used it in a long time, you should start with a low THC dose and wait a couple of hours before having more (CRC). The times below are from its Cannabis 101 sheet.

FormKeep the door toTakes effectPeaksCan last
Edible or drink5 mg of THC or less1 to 3 hours3 hoursUp to 24 hours
Smoked or vapedA puff or two, then wait2 to 10 minutes30 to 50 minutes4 to 6 hours
  • Why 5 mg: Cannabis 101 sorts products at 5 mg of THC, with below that as low THC and above it as high THC. State labeling rules cap a single serving at 10 mg (CRC labeling guide). The 5 mg ceiling is our choice for a calendar, inside those limits.
  • New or out of practice: drink half of one first and wait.
  • One THC door at a time: “Say no to dose stacking,” the CRC says. Every New Jersey edible label warns that effects may be delayed by two or more hours, so opening another door early only stacks them.
  • Alcohol: the CRC warns that cannabis with alcohol can impair more than either alone, which matters at holiday parties.
  • Driving: don't. Impaired-driving laws apply to cannabis (CRC).

Keep It Away From Kids and Pets

An advent calendar is something children reach for, so handle this one like a locked cabinet and not a decoration. The CRC says cannabis products “can cause serious harm when accidentally ingested by children and pets” (CRC).

  • Lock it away, out of reach and out of sight, never on a mantel or shelf.
  • Leave items in their packaging. New Jersey products are sold in resealable, child-resistant packages, and the CRC says to keep edibles clearly marked and away from other food.
  • Build it where children won't see it, and use plain bags with nothing that looks like a toy or sweets.

If a child gets into it

Get medical attention immediately. Call the New Jersey Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the person is unconscious or not responding, call 911 (CRC).

Rather Not Build 24 Doors?

Let them choose instead

A dispensary gift card lets the adult you are shopping for pick their own products. Our guide explains how these cards work in New Jersey, including the state's expiry and fee rules. Whether The Library has gift cards right now is a question for the store, so call (862) 415-1353 to ask.

Weed Advent Calendar FAQ

Where can I buy a weed advent calendar in New Jersey?
Only at a licensed New Jersey dispensary, and only if that store stocks one. The Library's online menu listed no advent calendar on November 8, 2026. The other legal route is to build your own from licensed products.
Can a weed advent calendar be shipped to New Jersey?
No. USPS lists marijuana, medical or otherwise, among items you can't send in the U.S. mail. New Jersey also says that buying cannabis anywhere other than its licensed dispensaries is illegal and that it is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines.
Are hemp or THCA advent calendars legal in New Jersey?
Not from an online seller. Since April 13, 2026, New Jersey treats flower over 0.3% total THC and products over 0.4 mg of total THC per container as cannabis, and the state's hemp law bars selling hemp-derived products online. From November 14, 2026, hemp drinks over 0.4 mg of total THC per container can be sold only by licensed Class 5 cannabis retailers.
Can I order a CBD advent calendar online in New Jersey?
Be careful. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says New Jersey's hemp law prohibits selling, offering to sell or distributing any hemp-derived product online, so an online CBD calendar is not a route we would count on.
Can I give someone a weed advent calendar as a gift?
Yes, in New Jersey, to an adult 21 or older. You may give up to 1 ounce (28.35 grams) or the equivalent, for personal and not business reasons, and you may not accept any payment. Every THC item must come from a licensed retailer, shown by its original packaging or a receipt.
Can I bring a weed advent calendar to family in another state?
No. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says it is still illegal to transport cannabis across state lines.
How much THC should be in each door?
Keep it low. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission's Cannabis 101 sheet draws its line at 5 mg of THC, and New Jersey caps a single serving at 10 mg. This plan uses 5 mg drinks and wait times from the same sheet. Edibles can take 1 to 3 hours to take effect, so do not open a second door to speed things up.
Is there a smoking advent calendar for adults?
Calendars holding only papers, tips and similar accessories contain no cannabis. Our stoner gifts guide covers accessory gifts, and the plan on this page mixes accessory doors in with a few THC doors.
Does The Library deliver advent calendars or cannabis?
No. The Library does not offer delivery. You can shop in store at 5 Washington Street in West Orange or order ahead for pickup. Licensed delivery services in New Jersey must check ID before completing a delivery.
