Maplewood's cannabis rules, in plain English

Maplewood regulates cannabis in Chapter 98 of its township code. The parts that matter to a shopper:

  • Up to four stores. The township may issue at most four retail licenses (§ 98-5E), and every store needs both a state license and a township license (§ 98-3A).
  • Hours cap. Stores may open no earlier than 8 a.m. and must close by 10 p.m., every day (§ 98-8A). Each store sets its own hours inside that window.
  • No lounges, no use on site. Consumption areas are banned, and nobody may use cannabis on a store's premises (§ 98-8C, § 98-8E).
  • Delivery is allowed. State-licensed delivery services may deliver in Maplewood (§ 98-3E).
  • 2% local tax. Maplewood adds a 2% cannabis tax to each sale (§ 98-10), on top of New Jersey's 6.625% sales tax. West Orange charges the same 2% (§ 22-3), so the total is 8.625% in either town.
  • Distance from schools. A store's entrance must be at least 500 feet from the entrance of a K-12 school (§ 98-13B).

Getting to The Library from Maplewood

The simplest drive is one road almost the whole way: take Valley Street north. It becomes Scotland Road and then High Street; turn left onto Washington Street. Parking is free in the on-site lot.

By train

  • Morris & Essex Line, Maplewood to Orange: about 10 minutes. Trains run Maplewood, South Orange, Mountain Station, Highland Avenue, Orange. Most weekday trains stop at Orange, but not all, so check the timetable.
  • From Orange station, the store is about a 25-minute walk (1.1 miles). NJ Transit bus 21 also runs along Main Street from near the station; get off at Main St and Franklin Ave, about a 7-minute walk away.
  • No direct bus. No NJ Transit bus runs from Maplewood to Washington Street in West Orange.

When the trip to West Orange makes sense

If you just want the nearest store, it is in Maplewood. The Library is worth the 14 minutes when:

  • You are already heading toward Orange or West Orange. Valley Street becomes Scotland Road and High Street on the way.
  • You want to order ahead and stay in the car: curbside pickup brings the order to you, and staff check ID there.
  • You want easy parking: the free lot is on site.
  • It is a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening: The Library is open until 9 PM those days.
