Dispensaries in East Orange, NJ

The short answer

  • East Orange has two licensed dispensaries: Baked Goodz on Main Street and HZY Goods on Prospect Street, a few blocks apart. Both sell to adults 21+.
  • Neither is a medical dispensary. East Orange's code does not allow them in the city.
  • Not every shop selling weed is licensed. The city shut down eight illegal smoke shops between March and August 2026.
  • The Library is about 2 miles away at 5 Washington Street in West Orange: roughly 4 to 6 minutes by car without traffic, or one bus (the 97) to the corner.

The two licensed dispensaries in East Orange

These are the only East Orange stores on the state's map and list of licensed dispensaries. License numbers are from the Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Distances are driving miles from East Orange City Hall.

  • The city council has backed other proposed dispensary sites, but on September 30, 2026 only these two were on the state's map of open, licensed stores.

Licensed dispensary or illegal smoke shop?

On August 4, 2026, the City of East Orange said its police, code enforcement and health departments had shut down eight businesses since March 2026 for operating in violation of state and local law, and seized more than 225 pounds of marijuana. The city's list includes T and B Convenience Store (225-233 Central Avenue) and a shop called Flavors (613-623 Central Avenue). “Flavors Wellness - East Orange” still shows up in some online directories, but it is not on the state's licensed map or list.

Five checks from the Cannabis Regulatory Commission

  • It is on the state map. Search the CRC's dispensary map by city or ZIP code before you go.
  • The license is on the wall. Licensed stores must display their CRC license certificate.
  • They check your ID. Every customer must be 21 or older. A shop that doesn't ask is a red flag.
  • Everything is from New Jersey. Licensed stores sell only cannabis grown and made in the state.
  • You pay tax and get a receipt. In East Orange that is 6.625% sales tax plus the city's 2%.

As the city's release points out, products from unlicensed shops are not subject to New Jersey's testing, labeling or quality rules.

East Orange's cannabis rules, in plain English

East Orange regulates cannabis in Chapter 120 of its city code. What it means for a shopper:

  • Room for more stores. The city may issue up to six standard and six microbusiness retail permits (§ 120-5I), and a store needs both a state license and a city permit (§ 120-5C(1)). Two are open today.
  • No medical dispensaries. Alternative treatment centers are not allowed in the city (§ 120-5C(3)(b)). The nearest store the CRC lists for medical patients is RISE on Bloomfield Avenue in Bloomfield, about 2 miles from City Hall.
  • Lounges are allowed indoors, but none is open. A store can add a consumption area with both a state and a city endorsement; outdoor ones are banned (§ 120-5C(6), § 120-6C(4)).
  • Delivery is allowed from state-licensed businesses (§ 120-5C(3)).
  • 2% local tax. East Orange adds 2% to each sale (§ 120-4C), on top of New Jersey's 6.625% sales tax. West Orange charges the same 2% (§ 22-3), so the total is 8.625% in either city.
  • Not in residential zones. Stores are allowed only in certain downtown, commercial, industrial and arts-district zones and on a list of designated lots (§ 120-6C(2)).

Questions East Orange shoppers ask

How many dispensaries are in East Orange, NJ?

Two are licensed and open: HZY Goods at 19 Prospect Street and Baked Goodz at 484 Main Street (also called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard). They are the only East Orange stores on the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission's dispensary map and licensee list. Both sell to adults 21 and older.

Is there a medical marijuana dispensary in East Orange?

No. East Orange's code does not allow alternative treatment centers, the stores licensed to serve medical patients, to operate in the city (section 120-5C(3)(b)). The nearest store the CRC lists for medical patients is RISE at 26-48 Bloomfield Avenue in Bloomfield, about 2 miles from East Orange City Hall. The Library is adult-use only.

Is Flavors Wellness in East Orange a licensed dispensary?

No. "Flavors Wellness - East Orange" is not on the CRC's dispensary map or licensee list. In a release dated August 4, 2026, the City of East Orange listed a shop called Flavors at 613-623 Central Avenue among eight illegal smoke shops it had shut down since March 2026.

How can I tell if a cannabis shop is licensed?

Look it up on the CRC's dispensary map before you go. Inside, a licensed store must display its CRC license certificate and check that every customer is 21 or older. It sells only cannabis grown and made in New Jersey, and it charges sales tax and gives a receipt.

How far is The Library from East Orange?

About 1.4 to 2.2 miles, or 4 to 6 minutes without traffic, depending on where you start. From the Main Street side of East Orange, take Harrison Street north; it becomes Washington Street, which runs straight to The Library at 5 Washington Street, West Orange.

Is there a bus from East Orange to The Library?

Yes. NJ Transit bus 97 boards on Main Street (ML King Jr. Blvd) at Prospect Street and stops at Washington Street and Meade Street, next to the store. It runs about every 70 minutes, Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service. Bus 21 runs every day along Main Street to Main Street and Franklin Avenue in West Orange, a 5 to 8 minute walk away.

Is cannabis taxed the same in East Orange and West Orange?

Yes. Both cities add a 2% local cannabis tax on top of New Jersey's 6.625% sales tax, so a purchase in either one is taxed at 8.625% in total.

Can I get cannabis delivered in East Orange?

East Orange allows licensed cannabis delivery. On the CRC's dispensary map, HZY Goods is the East Orange store marked as offering delivery. The Library does not deliver; it offers in-store and curbside pickup.

Are there cannabis lounges in East Orange?

None is open. East Orange's code allows indoor consumption lounges with both a state and a city endorsement and bans outdoor ones, but on September 30, 2026 no East Orange store was marked on the CRC map as having a consumption area. There is no consumption on site at The Library.
