Dispensary Gift Cards in New Jersey

The short answer

A dispensary gift card is a store's own card, spent at that store by an adult 21 or older. Under New Jersey law its money can't expire within 24 months of the sale, and on many store cards sold since December 1, 2012 it never expires.

  • Where it works: at the store that sold it, toward anything on that store's menu.
  • Who can use it: adults 21+ with a government-issued photo ID.
  • Bank gift cards are different: a Visa or Mastercard gift card only works where the store accepts it. The Library takes cash, debit and CanPay.
  • The Library: 5 Washington Street, West Orange, NJ 07052. Free parking, open 7 days.

How a dispensary gift card works

It works like a gift card at any local shop, with the cannabis rules layered on top. Here is the path from buying one to using it.

  1. You buy it from the store. A dispensary gift card is issued by that one store. Ask at the store which amounts it sells and how you can pay for it.
  2. You give it to an adult. Only adults 21 or older can shop at a licensed New Jersey dispensary, residents or visitors.
  3. They bring the card and an ID. Staff must see a government-issued photo ID before every sale. They may not copy it or keep a record of the purchase beyond the sale itself.
  4. They pick what they like. The card is applied at checkout toward their order. The state's per-purchase limit still applies: up to 1 ounce of flower, or 4 grams of concentrate or vape oil, or 1,000 mg of edibles.
  5. Any balance stays on the card. If less than $5 is left, New Jersey law lets them ask for it in cash.

Do dispensary gift cards expire in New Jersey?

No, not within 2 years, and often never. New Jersey has two laws that protect the money on a store card. Which one covers a card depends on the seller (for example, a seller that sold $250,000 or less in cards over the past year falls under the gift card law), so read the card or the receipt for its exact terms.

Can you use a Visa gift card at a dispensary?

Don't plan on it. A Visa or Mastercard gift card is a prepaid bank card, which New Jersey's gift card law treats as a different product from a store's own card. Whether a dispensary takes one depends on how that store accepts payment.

  • At The Library: cash, debit or CanPay. No credit cards. There is an ATM on site.
  • Holding a prepaid card? Call (862) 415-1353 before you go and ask whether it will go through.

Six questions to ask before you buy one

Stores set their own gift card terms. Ask these at the counter or on the phone, at The Library or anywhere else:

  • Which amounts can I buy, and can I choose my own?
  • Is it a physical card, or a code sent by text or email?
  • Can it be used on an order-ahead pickup, or only at the register?
  • Does it work on sale items and deals?
  • What happens if the card is lost: can the balance be replaced?
  • Is any expiry date or fee printed on the card or receipt?

Rather give something from the menu?

In New Jersey one adult may give another adult 21+ up to 1 ounce of cannabis, as long as no money changes hands for it. The gift can't leave the state.

Dispensary gift card questions

Do dispensaries sell gift cards?

Some do. A dispensary gift card is the store's own card: it is bought from that store and spent at that store toward anything on its menu. Whether a store offers one, in which amounts and on what terms is the store's choice, so ask the store before you plan on one.

Does The Library sell gift cards?

Call (862) 415-1353 to ask. The Library's online menu did not list a gift card on October 25, 2026, so the store can tell you whether gift cards are available right now, the amounts and the terms.

Will a gift card work at a dispensary?

A store's own gift card works at the store that sold it. A Visa, Mastercard or other bank gift card is a different product: whether a dispensary takes it depends on the payment methods that store accepts. The Library's posted payment methods are cash, debit and CanPay, and it does not take credit cards.

Can you use a Visa gift card at a dispensary?

Don't count on it. A Visa gift card is a prepaid bank card, not a store gift card, and many dispensaries accept only cash, debit or a cannabis payment app. At The Library the posted options are cash, debit and CanPay. Call before you go if you want to use a prepaid card.

Why don't some dispensaries have gift cards?

Each store decides. Paying by card works differently for cannabis than in other shops, and a gift card program in New Jersey comes with legal duties: the funds must stay valid for years, fees are limited and small balances must be paid out in cash on request. Some stores choose not to run one.

What forms of payment do dispensaries accept?

It varies by store. The Library accepts cash, debit and CanPay, has an ATM on site, and does not accept credit cards.

Do dispensary gift cards expire in New Jersey?

Not quickly. Under N.J.S.A. 56:8-110 the money on a gift card cannot expire within 24 months of the sale, and under N.J.S.A. 46:30B-42.1 the funds on many store cards sold since December 1, 2012 never expire. Any expiry date or fee has to be printed on the card, the receipt or the package.

Who can use a dispensary gift card?

Only an adult 21 or older can shop at a licensed New Jersey dispensary, and staff must see a government-issued photo ID. The usual per-purchase limits still apply when a gift card pays for the order.

What products are available at a dispensary?

In New Jersey the legal categories include dried flower, concentrated oils, resin, vape formulas, tinctures, topicals, lozenges, soft chews and shelf-stable edibles, but each store's stock varies. The Library's online menu on October 25, 2026 listed flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, edibles and accessories.

What not to do at a dispensary?

Don't come without a valid government-issued photo ID, don't go over the per-purchase limit, and don't use cannabis on site: The Library has no consumption on its premises. Don't drive while impaired, and don't take your purchase across state lines.

Can I give cannabis as a gift in New Jersey?

Yes, between adults. The NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission says you may give up to 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of cannabis to another adult 21 or older, and you may not accept any payment for it. You cannot take cannabis across state lines.
