The short version
When Is Green Wednesday 2026?

What Green Wednesday Is
Green Wednesday is not an official holiday. It is a shopping pattern that retailers in legal states noticed and then named: the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is when people buy for a four-day weekend with family in the house, long dinners and not much to do on Thursday. Dispensaries started running specials to match the demand, and the specials made the day bigger.
Two things set it apart from Black Friday. First, the shopping is for the weekend itself rather than for gifts, so people buy what they will use on Thursday. Second, Thanksgiving Day is one of the quietest days of the year for dispensaries. Headset measured Thanksgiving sales down as much as 70% against an average Thursday in 2023, so Wednesday absorbs two days of demand in one.
How Big the Day Is

US dispensary sales on Green Wednesday, November 26, 2025 (Headset)
1.7x
an average sales day; second only to 4/20 ($135.3M in 2026)
+52%
over an average Wednesday in 2023, up from +33% in 2021 and +48% in 2022
Headset's ranking of the biggest cannabis sales days, updated October 3, 2026, puts 4/20 first, Green Wednesday second at $114.0 million, Black Friday third at $108.1 million, the day before July 4th fourth and the Friday before Labor Day fifth. Every peak except 4/20 is the day before a holiday rather than the holiday itself, which is the whole logic of Green Wednesday: buy on Wednesday, because Thursday is for family.

THC drinks deserve their own note this year. According to the Cannabis Regulatory Commission's hemp FAQ, New Jersey's new definition of hemp took effect on April 13, 2026, and since May 31, 2026 an intoxicating hemp beverage may hold no more than 5 mg of THC per serving or 10 mg per container. Liquor wholesalers and liquor stores may sell those beverages only until November 13, 2026, twelve days before Green Wednesday. From November 14, a hemp beverage with more than 0.4 mg of THC per container can be sold only by a licensed cannabis retailer. Our THC drinks page explains what that means and what The Library carries.

New Jersey Purchase Limits, ID and Tax
The rules below come from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission and the Division of Taxation; the links are in the Sources section. They matter more on Green Wednesday than on any other day, because the one-ounce cap is per transaction and most people are buying for four days.
- You must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, passport or military ID all work.
- New Jersey residents and visitors can both buy; the Cannabis Regulatory Commission says so on its adult-use page. Carrying cannabis across state lines is still illegal, so it stays in New Jersey.
- Per transaction: the equivalent of 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of usable cannabis. That is 1 ounce of flower, or 4 grams of concentrate or vape oil, or 1,000 mg of edibles, or a mix, for example a half ounce of flower plus 2 grams of concentrate.
- Possession: adults may have up to 6 ounces.
- Tax: retail cannabis sales are subject to New Jersey Sales Tax, which is 6.625% (Division of Taxation). West Orange also levies a 2% cannabis transfer tax on the dispensary's sales (West Orange Township Code § 22-3).
- Pay with cash, debit or CanPay. Credit cards are not accepted for cannabis. An ATM is on site.
- Do not use anything in the car or the lot, and do not drive after using. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says New Jersey's impaired-driving laws apply to cannabis.
