A customer holds up a small jar to the light. Inside are crystalline structures that look like crushed ice or raw sugar — translucent, faceted, and glinting under the dispensary LEDs. “Are those actual diamonds?” No. But they are the most potent cannabis product on the planet.

THC diamonds — technically THCA diamonds — are crystalline cannabis concentrates that can reach 99% purity. They are to cannabis what espresso is to drip coffee: the same active ingredient, concentrated to an entirely different level. A single grain can deliver more THC than an entire joint.

This guide is for people who have graduated past flower and standard concentrates and want to understand the pinnacle of cannabis potency. It is also for curious beginners who have seen diamonds on the menu and want to know what they are before ever trying them. Both audiences are welcome — just know that these products demand respect.

THC Diamonds: The Quick Version

THC diamonds are crystalline THCA concentrates testing at 95-99% purity — the most potent cannabis product available. They look like small crystals or sugar and must be heated (dabbed, vaped, or added to flower) to produce effects. Start with a rice-grain-sized piece. Effects are immediate, intense, and last 1-3 hours. Experienced users only. Always buy from a licensed dispensary for tested, safe products.

What Are THC Diamonds?

THC diamonds (also called THCA diamonds, cannabis diamonds, or diamond concentrates) are a form of cannabis concentrate that has been purified to the point where the THCA crystallizes into solid, faceted structures. They are called “diamonds” because they literally look like small, translucent gemstones or raw quartz crystals.

In their raw form, diamonds contain almost pure THCA — the non-psychoactive precursor to THC. When you apply heat (through dabbing, vaping, or adding to a bowl), the THCA converts to THC instantly, producing the most potent cannabis experience available in any product form. For a detailed explanation of the THCA-to-THC conversion, read our THCA vs THC guide.

What Do THC Diamonds Look Like?

THC diamonds range in size from tiny granules (like coarse sugar) to large crystals (like small pieces of rock candy). They are typically clear to slightly amber in color, with a hard, crystalline structure. Some products sell diamonds sitting in “sauce” — a golden, terpene-rich liquid that forms during the extraction process.

THCA Diamonds vs THC Diamonds: Naming Explained

Technically, almost all “THC diamonds” are actually THCA diamonds. The crystals form from THCA, not THC. People call them THC diamonds because the THCA converts to THC the moment you heat them, and THC is the compound you actually feel.

This is the same naming convention used for flower. When someone says “this strain has 28% THC,” they are usually referring to the THCA percentage, which converts to approximately 24.5% THC when smoked. The industry uses THC and THCA somewhat interchangeably in casual conversation, even though they are technically different compounds. When precision matters — like reading lab labels — the distinction is important.

How THC Diamonds Are Made

1

Initial Extraction

Cannabis flower or trim is extracted using a hydrocarbon solvent (usually butane or propane) or CO2. This produces a crude cannabis oil containing THC, terpenes, waxes, and other plant compounds.

2

Winterization

The crude extract is dissolved in ethanol and frozen. This causes fats, waxes, and lipids to solidify and separate out, leaving a cleaner, purer cannabis oil.

3

Diamond Mining (Crystallization)

The purified extract is placed in a sealed vessel under controlled temperature and pressure for days to weeks. During this time, THCA molecules slowly arrange themselves into crystalline structures — the diamonds. The terpene-rich liquid that remains is called 'sauce.'

4

Separation and Testing

Diamonds are separated from the sauce (or sold together), then lab-tested for potency, residual solvents, and contaminants. The final product typically tests at 95-99% THCA for isolated diamonds.

What the Experience Feels Like

A properly dosed diamond dab hits fast — within seconds — and produces immediate, intense euphoria, a powerful body sensation, and a noticeable head change. The experience is clean and potent, especially with isolated diamonds that lack terpenes (producing a very “THC-forward” high without the nuanced flavor profile of full-spectrum products).

Diamonds in sauce combine extreme potency with terpene-driven effects — the sauce provides the flavor and the entourage effect, while the diamonds bring the raw power. This combination is often considered the premium concentrate experience. For more on how terpenes shape effects, see our terpenes guide.

How to Use THC Diamonds: 4 Methods

1. Dabbing (Recommended)

The standard method. Use a dab rig with a quartz banger. Heat the banger with a torch, let it cool to 450-550°F (use a temp gun for precision), place a rice-grain-sized diamond with a dab tool, cover with a carb cap, and inhale. Low-temp dabs (450°F) preserve more terpenes if using diamonds in sauce.

2. E-Rig or E-Nail

Electronic dab rigs (like the Puffco Peak) and e-nails heat to precise temperatures without a torch. Load a small piece of diamond, select your temperature, and inhale. More consistent and beginner-friendly than torch dabbing.

3. Top a Bowl or Joint

Crush a small diamond into powder and sprinkle it on top of flower in a bowl or inside a joint. This boosts potency significantly. The flower provides the ignition source to decarboxylate the THCA. Use sparingly — a little goes a long way.

4. Concentrate Vaporizer

Some vape pens are designed for concentrates. Place a small piece of diamond in the chamber and vaporize at the appropriate temperature. Check that your vaporizer is rated for solid concentrates, not just liquids.

THC Diamond Dosing Guide

Diamonds Are Not for Beginners

If you are new to cannabis or have only used flower and low-dose edibles, diamonds are not where you should start. Work up through flower, then standard concentrates (wax, live resin), before moving to diamonds. The potency jump is significant and can cause extreme anxiety, paranoia, and discomfort in unprepared users.

Rice grain (~10-25mg THCA)

For: Concentrate beginners, moderate tolerance

Strong but manageable. Clear euphoria, body relaxation. This is where everyone should start with diamonds.

Small pea (~25-50mg THCA)

For: Regular concentrate users

Very strong. Significant impairment. Experienced users will enjoy the intensity.

Large piece (~50-100mg+ THCA)

For: Very high tolerance only

Extreme potency. Not recommended for anyone who is not a daily, heavy concentrate user.

Safety and Storage

Start incredibly small

A piece the size of a grain of rice is enough for a first-time diamond user. You can always take a second dab — you cannot un-dab the first one.

Use proper equipment

Diamonds require a dab rig, e-rig, or concentrate vaporizer. Do not try to smoke diamonds in a regular pipe without flower — they will not ignite properly and you will waste the product.

Mind the temperature

Too hot (600°F+) burns terpenes and produces harsh, less effective vapor. Too cold and the diamond will not fully vaporize. Aim for 450-550°F for the best balance of potency and smoothness.

Store properly

Keep diamonds in their original glass jar, sealed, in a cool dark place. Avoid silicone containers for long-term storage — terpenes can degrade silicone over time. Refrigeration is ideal for extended storage.

Handle with tools, not fingers

Use a metal dab tool to handle diamonds. Body heat and oils from your fingers can degrade the product, and the crystals can be difficult to grip.

THC Diamonds in New Jersey

THC diamonds and other cannabis concentrates are available at licensed New Jersey dispensaries for adults 21 and over. Not every dispensary carries diamonds at all times — concentrate selection varies by store and by week. At The Library, we carry diamonds, live resin, wax, and other concentrates from multiple brands. Our budtenders can help you choose the right product and walk you through proper use.

All dispensary concentrates are lab-tested for potency, residual solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. This testing is critical for concentrates — improperly purged concentrates can contain harmful residual solvents that are dangerous to inhale. Never purchase concentrates from unlicensed sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are THC diamonds?+
THC diamonds (technically THCA diamonds) are crystalline cannabis concentrates that can reach up to 99% purity. They form as solid, translucent crystals that look like small gemstones or granulated sugar. They are the purest and most potent form of cannabis concentrate available at dispensaries. When heated through dabbing or vaping, the THCA converts to THC and produces extremely potent psychoactive effects.
How strong are THC diamonds?+
THC diamonds typically test between 95-99% THCA, making them the most potent cannabis product available. For comparison, high-quality flower averages 20-30% THC, and most other concentrates (wax, shatter, live resin) range from 60-90% THC. A single small dab of diamonds delivers significantly more THC than an entire joint. They are strictly for experienced cannabis users who have built up tolerance to lower-potency products.
How do you smoke THC diamonds?+
The most common method is dabbing using a dab rig with a quartz banger or e-nail. Heat the banger, let it cool slightly to the ideal temperature (450-550°F), place a rice-grain-sized piece of diamond on the hot surface with a dab tool, cover with a carb cap, and inhale slowly. THC diamonds can also be added to flower in a joint or bowl for extra potency, or vaporized in a concentrate-compatible vape pen. Never smoke diamonds without proper equipment.
What is the difference between diamonds and sauce?+
Diamonds are the pure THCA crystals — nearly 99% cannabinoid with minimal terpenes. Sauce (or terp sauce) is the terpene-rich liquid that forms around the diamonds during the extraction process. Diamonds alone deliver maximum potency but less flavor. Sauce delivers more flavor but slightly less potency. Many products sell 'diamonds and sauce' together, combining the potency of the crystals with the flavor and entourage effect of the terpene-rich liquid.
Are THC diamonds safe?+
THC diamonds from licensed dispensaries are as safe as any tested cannabis product. They are lab-verified for purity and tested for residual solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. The primary safety concern is potency — at 95-99% THCA, overconsumption is easy, especially for inexperienced users. Start with the smallest possible amount (a rice-grain-sized piece) and wait to feel the effects before taking more. Diamonds should only be used by experienced cannabis consumers.
Can you eat THC diamonds to get high?+
Eating raw THC diamonds will not get you high because they contain THCA, which is non-psychoactive until heated. To use diamonds in edibles, you would need to decarboxylate them first (heat them to convert THCA to THC) before mixing into food or drinks. However, this is generally not recommended for home use because the extreme potency makes accurate dosing very difficult. Dispensary edibles are a safer option for oral consumption.
