GG4 — originally called Gorilla Glue, now officially “Original Glue” — is the strain that glues you to the couch and never apologizes for it. Born from an accidental pollination that turned out to be one of the luckiest breeding events in cannabis history, this hybrid delivers face-melting potency, diesel-soaked flavor, and resin production so extreme that the buds stick to everything they touch.

Here is the complete profile from our budtenders at The Library in West Orange.

Overview & Genetics

GG4 was created accidentally by Joesy Whales and Lone Watty when a Chem's Sister plant hermied and pollinated a Sour Dubb plant. Rather than discarding the seeds, they grew them out and crossed the best results with Chocolate Diesel. The fourth phenotype from that final cross — #4 — was the clear winner: extreme resin production, off-the-charts THC, and a flavor profile that combined the best of all three parents.

GG4 won the 2014 Cannabis Cup in both Los Angeles and Michigan, then took first place at the 2015 World Cannabis Cup. Those awards launched it into mainstream fame, and it has remained one of the most popular strains in America ever since. It is now a foundational breeding strain, appearing in the lineage of dozens of modern crosses.

The buds are dense, chunky, and absolutely plastered with trichomes. The resin is so abundant that GG4 is a favorite strain for concentrate makers — it yields exceptionally well for rosin, wax, and shatter production. Visually, expect dark green buds with brown and orange hairs, all buried under a crystalline white frost.

Effects & Experience

GG4 hits fast and hard. Within minutes, a powerful euphoric rush washes over the mind — a burst of happiness and mental uplift that makes everything feel interesting and good. This cerebral phase is potent but short-lived, lasting 10 to 20 minutes before the body effects take center stage.

The physical relaxation that follows is intense. GG4 earned its name partly because it “glues” you to whatever surface you happen to be sitting on. Full-body heaviness sets in, muscles release, and movement becomes optional. This is definitive couch-lock — the kind where you look at the remote control three feet away and decide the show you are watching is fine. For experienced users, this is bliss. For the unprepared, it can be overwhelming.

Medical & Wellness

Users frequently report that GG4 may help with:

Chronic Pain

GG4's extreme potency and heavy body effects make it one of the most popular strains for pain management. The combination of high THC and dominant caryophyllene may provide significant relief from chronic pain, arthritis, and muscle spasms.

Insomnia

The intense couch-lock and sedation make GG4 effective for users struggling with sleep. Higher doses reliably lead to drowsiness and sleep onset, especially when consumed 60-90 minutes before bedtime.

Stress & PTSD

The initial euphoric rush may help manage stress and quiet intrusive thoughts. The heavy relaxation that follows can provide a sense of safety and calm that some PTSD sufferers find beneficial.

Appetite Loss

GG4 is known for triggering strong hunger. Users dealing with appetite loss from medication, treatment, or eating disorders may find this effect helpful.

Important Note

Cannabis is not FDA-approved medicine. These observations come from user reports and preliminary research. Consult a healthcare provider before using cannabis for any medical condition.

Terpene Profile

Caryophyllene (Dominant)

Aroma: Spicy, peppery, diesel

Caryophyllene is the primary driver of GG4's peppery, fuel-like kick. As the only terpene that binds to CB2 receptors, it may directly contribute to anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. Also found in black pepper, cloves, and hops.

Myrcene (Secondary)

Aroma: Earthy, musky, herbal

Myrcene contributes to the heavy sedation and couch-lock that defines the GG4 experience. It is the most common terpene in cannabis and is associated with the 'body melt' feeling. Also found in mangoes, hops, and thyme.

Limonene (Tertiary)

Aroma: Citrus, lemon, sharp

Limonene provides a bright counterpoint to the heavy diesel and earth, adding a citrus zing that keeps the flavor from being one-dimensionally dark. It contributes to the initial mood-lifting euphoria. Also found in lemon rinds and oranges.

Flavor & Aroma

GG4 is one of the most aromatic strains you will ever encounter. Opening a jar releases an immediate wall of diesel fuel and pine sap — pungent, sharp, and impossible to ignore. Beneath the fuel notes sits a warm chocolate earthiness from the Chocolate Diesel lineage, giving the aroma an unexpected depth.

On the inhale, expect heavy diesel and pine with a sour, chemical bite from the Chemdawg genetics. The exhale reveals the chocolate and coffee undertones — a rich, almost mocha-like warmth that lingers on the palate. There is a distinct sharpness to the smoke that some users love and others find intense. If you enjoy gassy, fuel-forward strains, GG4 is the gold standard. If you prefer fruity or sweet profiles, consider Runtz or Zkittlez instead.

Budtender's Take

“GG4 is the strain I point to when someone says 'I want the strongest thing you have.' It delivers exactly what it promises — face-melting potency with a diesel flavor that real cannabis heads love. But I always give the same warning: do not make plans after smoking this. It is called Glue for a reason. Start with one hit and wait. If you love Chemdawg or Sour Diesel, GG4 is the evolution.”

Best paired with: A recliner, a heavy blanket, delivery food on the way, and a show you have been meaning to binge. This is not a productivity strain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Gorilla Glue called GG4?

Gorilla Glue was renamed to GG4 (and later 'Original Glue') after the Gorilla Glue adhesive company filed a trademark lawsuit against the strain's creators. The #4 indicates it was the fourth phenotype selected from the original cross of Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel — and the one that became famous. Phenotypes #1 through #3 were different expressions of the same genetics that did not achieve the same potency or resin production.

How strong is Gorilla Glue GG4?

GG4 is one of the most potent hybrid strains available, typically testing between 25% and 32% THC. It has won multiple Cannabis Cup awards for highest THC content. The potency is immediately apparent — even experienced users note the fast onset and heavy effects. Beginners should approach with extreme caution, starting with a very small amount.

Is Gorilla Glue indica or sativa?

GG4 is a balanced-to-slightly-indica-leaning hybrid, approximately 50% indica and 50% sativa (some phenotypes lean 60/40 indica). It was created by crossing Chem's Sister (a sativa-leaning Chemdawg cut), Sour Dubb (a balanced hybrid), and Chocolate Diesel (a sativa-leaning hybrid). The effects start with sativa-like cerebral euphoria before transitioning to heavy indica body relaxation and couch-lock.

What does Gorilla Glue smell like?

GG4 has a pungent aroma dominated by diesel fuel, pine sap, and earthy chocolate. Opening a container of GG4 fills the room immediately — it is one of the most aromatic strains in cannabis. The diesel comes from its Chemdawg lineage, the pine from its high pinene terpene content, and the chocolate from the Chocolate Diesel parent. There is also a sour, almost chemical sharpness that makes it unmistakable.

Why is GG4 so sticky?

GG4 produces an extraordinarily high volume of trichomes — the resin glands that contain cannabinoids and terpenes. The trichome production is so dense that the buds literally stick to scissors, grinders, and fingers during handling, which is how the strain got its 'Gorilla Glue' name. This extreme resin production is also what makes GG4 excellent for concentrate extraction and contributes to its high THC testing results.
