Cannabis Cartridges Guide
Everything you need to know about THC vape carts
What Are Cannabis Cartridges?
Cannabis cartridges (vape carts) are pre-filled containers of cannabis oil designed to attach to rechargeable vape batteries. They offer a convenient, discreet, and portable way to consume cannabis without smoking flower. At The Library dispensary in West Orange, we offer a wide selection of high-quality cartridges for every preference.
Vape carts have become one of the most popular cannabis products due to their ease of use, precise dosing, and minimal odor compared to smoking.
Types of Cannabis Cartridges
Distillate Cartridges
The most common and affordable type. Made from refined cannabis oil with 80-95% THC. Clear or light golden color. Often have added terpenes for flavor.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, high potency seekers, consistent experiences
Live Resin Cartridges
Premium carts made from fresh-frozen cannabis. Full terpene profile preserved for exceptional flavor. 70-85% THC with rich aroma. More expensive but worth it for flavor enthusiasts.
Best for: Flavor chasers, connoisseurs, full-spectrum experience. See our live resin guide.
Full-Spectrum Cartridges
Contain a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the whole plant. Entourage effect produces more balanced, nuanced effects. Darker oil color indicates less refinement.
Best for: Entourage effect seekers, natural product fans, wellness-focused users
CBD Cartridges
High CBD, low THC (usually under 0.3% THC). Non-intoxicating or mildly psychoactive. Relaxing effects without the high. Great for daytime use.
Best for: Beginners, anxiety relief, wellness without intoxication
510-Thread: The Universal Standard
Most cartridges use 510-thread connections—the universal standard for vape hardware.
This means one battery works with nearly all carts. The "510" refers to 10 threads, 0.5mm apart. Look for this compatibility when buying batteries or cartridges.
Standard 510 Batteries
Buttonless (draw-activated) or button-operated. Variable voltage (2.4-3.8V). Rechargeable via USB. Cost: $10-30.
Proprietary Systems
Some brands use proprietary cartridges (PAX Era, STIIIZY). Higher quality but limited to one brand's carts. Premium pricing.
How to Use Cannabis Cartridges
Attach Cartridge to Battery
Screw the cart onto a charged 510-thread battery. Hand-tighten only—don't overtighten or you'll damage the connection.
Set Voltage (if adjustable)
Start low (2.4-2.8V) for best flavor. Higher voltage (3.2-3.8V) = bigger clouds but harsh taste. Distillate handles higher temps; live resin needs lower.
Inhale Slowly & Steadily
Take 2-3 second draws. Slow inhalation prevents clogging and ensures smooth vapor. Don't hit it like you're pulling a thick milkshake!
Wait & Assess
Effects appear in 5-15 minutes. Wait before taking more. Beginners: Start with 1-2 small puffs.
Store Properly
Store upright to prevent leaking. Keep in cool, dark place. Remove cart from battery when not in use for extended periods.
What to Look For When Buying Carts
✓ Lab Testing Results
Reputable brands provide lab tests showing THC/CBD percentages, terpene profiles, and absence of harmful contaminants. Always buy from licensed dispensaries.
✓ Oil Color & Consistency
Clear to light amber = distillate (good). Golden/honey = live resin (great). Dark brown or separated = low quality or old (avoid).
✓ Strain & Terpene Info
Quality carts list strain name, dominant terpenes, and effects. This helps you choose products matching your desired experience.
✓ Hardware Quality
Glass or ceramic cartridges are better than plastic. Metal or ceramic heating elements are better than wick. Premium hardware enhances flavor and prevents burnt taste.
✓ Brand Reputation
Stick with established brands available at licensed dispensaries like The Library. Ask budtenders for recommendations—we know what sells well and why.
Troubleshooting Common Cart Issues
Cart Won't Hit / No Vapor
Causes: Dead battery, clogged airflow, connection issue
Fixes: Charge battery, gently warm cart with hands to thin oil, clean connection threads, try cart on different battery
Burnt Taste
Causes: Voltage too high, empty cart, damaged coil
Fixes: Lower voltage to 2.4-2.8V, check oil level, take slower draws, if coil is burnt cart is done
Leaking Oil
Causes: Overfilling, temperature changes, leaving cart horizontal
Fixes: Store upright, avoid extreme temps, don't overtighten on battery, quality carts leak less
Weak Hits / Low Vapor
Causes: Low battery, oil too thick, airflow blockage
Fixes: Fully charge battery, warm cart in hands, increase voltage slightly, clear air holes
