Overview & Genetics

White Widow was created by Shantibaba (Scott Blakey) at Green House Seed Company in Amsterdam by crossing a Brazilian sativa landrace with a South Indian indica. The Brazilian genetics provided the cerebral stimulation and energetic uplift, while the South Indian genetics contributed the resin production, physical relaxation, and structural robustness.

After winning the 1995 Cannabis Cup, White Widow became the most famous strain in Amsterdam's coffeeshop scene and quickly spread worldwide. It has since become one of the most important breeding parents in modern cannabis — its offspring include White Russian, White Rhino, Blue Widow, and dozens of other crosses.

The buds are the defining visual feature: dense, compact, and absolutely blanketed in white trichomes. The resin production is so heavy that the green of the plant is barely visible beneath the crystalline coating. Breaking a bud open reveals even more trichomes within. This extreme resin production makes White Widow excellent for hash and concentrate production.

Effects & Experience

White Widow begins with a burst of cerebral energy — the mind lights up with creative thoughts, conversations become more interesting, and there is a palpable sense of alertness and engagement. This is the Brazilian sativa genetics at work, and it is one of the most crisp, clean cerebral experiences in cannabis.

The indica side emerges 15 to 20 minutes later as a comfortable body relaxation that complements rather than competes with the mental activity. Your body feels at ease — muscles relax, tension fades — but you remain mentally sharp and engaged. This duality is what makes White Widow such an excellent social strain: you are relaxed enough to be comfortable but stimulated enough to carry a great conversation.

Medical & Wellness

Stress & Anxiety

White Widow's balanced effects make it a reliable choice for stress management. The cerebral uplift helps reframe negative thinking while the body relaxation prevents physical tension from building. Moderate potency means less risk of anxiety escalation.

Depression & Low Mood

The energizing, creative onset may help combat low mood and motivational issues. Many users report a genuine improvement in outlook and engagement with their day.

Pain & Inflammation

The moderate THC content and caryophyllene terpene levels may help manage everyday pain without heavy sedation. Suitable for functional daytime pain management.

Fatigue

The sativa-dominant cerebral effects can help combat afternoon tiredness without the sleep-inducing quality of indica strains. Good for maintaining energy while managing symptoms.

Terpene Profile

Myrcene (Dominant)

Aroma: Earthy, musky, herbal

Myrcene provides the earthy foundation of White Widow's aroma and contributes to the body relaxation that balances the cerebral effects. At the moderate levels found in White Widow, it relaxes without sedating.

Caryophyllene (Secondary)

Aroma: Spicy, peppery, warm

Caryophyllene gives White Widow its peppery bite and may contribute anti-inflammatory effects through CB2 receptor interaction. It adds warmth and complexity to the flavor.

Pinene (Tertiary)

Aroma: Sharp pine, fresh evergreen

Pinene contributes to the cerebral alertness and the signature pine-forest freshness in the aroma. It is associated with improved focus and may help counteract some of THC's short-term memory effects.

Flavor & Aroma

White Widow has a classic, old-school cannabis aroma — earthy, piney, and pungent with a sharp ammonia-like note that is distinctive and memorable. Beneath the earthiness sits a subtle floral sweetness and a peppery spice that emerges when the bud is ground.

The flavor on the inhale is smooth earthy pine with a bitter, almost herbal quality. The exhale brings the pepper and spice forward with a slightly sweet, woody finish. White Widow does not taste like candy or fruit — it tastes like serious cannabis, complex and layered. Experienced users who remember pre-legalization cannabis often describe White Widow as nostalgic — it is the flavor of Amsterdam coffeeshops and the strain that made many people fall in love with cannabis.

Budtender's Take

“White Widow is what I recommend when someone wants a balanced experience — not too heavy, not too heady, just right. It is the strain that works for a dinner party, a creative afternoon, or a mellow evening with a partner. The trichome coverage is also stunning — it looks like the buds were rolled in sugar. If you are coming back to cannabis after years away, White Widow is a great place to start because it is probably what you remember weed feeling like, but better.”

Best paired with: Dinner parties, creative brainstorming, music listening, board games, or any social activity where you want to be relaxed and present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called White Widow?

White Widow gets its name from the extraordinary trichome production that covers the buds in a thick white frost. When fully mature, the buds appear almost entirely white due to the density of resin glands, giving the flower a striking appearance that stands out from other strains. The 'Widow' part of the name adds to the mystique and has spawned an entire family of crosses including White Russian, White Rhino, and Blue Widow.

Is White Widow indica or sativa?

White Widow is a balanced hybrid, approximately 60% sativa and 40% indica. It was created by crossing a Brazilian sativa landrace with a South Indian indica. The effects reflect this balance — cerebral stimulation and creativity from the sativa side, combined with body relaxation and physical comfort from the indica side. It is one of the most genuinely balanced strains available.

How strong is White Widow?

White Widow typically tests between 18% and 25% THC, with most batches falling in the 20-22% range. In the 1990s when it debuted, this was considered extremely potent. By modern standards, it sits in the moderate-to-high range — strong enough to deliver clear effects but not so overwhelming that it will incapacitate you. This manageable potency is part of why White Widow has remained popular for over 30 years.

What does White Widow smell like?

White Widow has a pungent, earthy aroma with sharp notes of pine, pepper, and ammonia. It is a classic cannabis scent — not fruity or sweet like modern strains, but complex and satisfying in an old-school way. Many experienced users describe the smell as 'what weed used to smell like' in the best possible sense. There is a subtle floral sweetness underneath the earthiness that adds depth.

What are White Widow's best uses?

White Widow excels as a social and creative strain. The cerebral stimulation enhances conversation, music, and creative activities while the body relaxation keeps you comfortable. It works well for daytime or early evening use — active enough for social gatherings but relaxing enough for a mellow night. Many users also appreciate it for managing stress, mild pain, and mood issues due to its balanced effect profile.

Is White Widow still popular?

Yes. Despite being over 30 years old, White Widow remains one of the most recognizable and requested strains worldwide. It is still a staple in Amsterdam coffeeshops, still available at most American dispensaries, and still wins awards in competition. Its longevity speaks to the quality of the genetics — in a market that constantly chases novelty, White Widow has earned a permanent spot through consistent quality.
