Decarboxylation (often shortened to 'decarb') is the chemical process of heating cannabis to activate its cannabinoids. Raw cannabis contains THCA and CBDA — the acidic, non-psychoactive precursor forms of THC and CBD. When exposed to heat, these acids lose a carboxyl group (CO2) and convert into their active forms (THC and CBD). This is why you cannot get high from eating raw cannabis flower — the THCA has not been converted to THC. Smoking and vaping automatically decarboxylate cannabis through combustion/vaporization. For edibles, you must decarb the flower in an oven first.

What Is Decarboxylation (Cannabis Decarboxylation)?

Decarboxylation: Quick Summary

Heat converts inactive THCA/CBDA into active THC/CBD. Raw cannabis is NOT psychoactive — it must be heated.

Decarboxylation Key Facts

  • Heat converts inactive THCA/CBDA into active THC/CBD
  • Raw cannabis is NOT psychoactive — it must be heated
  • Smoking/vaping automatically decarbs through heat
  • For edibles: decarb at 220-245°F for 30-45 minutes in an oven
  • Over-heating destroys cannabinoids — temperature control is critical
  • Essential step for making cannabutter, oils, and tinctures at home

Decarboxylation FAQ

How do you decarb weed?

Preheat oven to 220-245°F. Break cannabis into small pieces and spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 30-45 minutes, stirring halfway. The cannabis should turn from green to golden-brown. Let cool before using in recipes. Temperature and time vary — 240°F for 40 minutes is a common recommendation.

Why do you need to decarb for edibles?

Raw cannabis contains THCA, which is not psychoactive. Eating raw flower will not get you high. Decarboxylation converts THCA to THC through heat. When you smoke or vape, this happens automatically. For edibles, you must decarb first because cooking temperatures alone may not be high enough or sustained long enough to fully activate the cannabinoids.
