A spliff is a cannabis cigarette rolled in standard rolling papers that contains a mixture of cannabis and loose tobacco. Unlike a joint (cannabis only) or a blunt (cannabis in a tobacco wrap), a spliff combines ground cannabis flower with loose tobacco inside the rolling paper. The cannabis-to-tobacco ratio varies by preference — from mostly cannabis with a pinch of tobacco to an even 50/50 split. Spliffs are significantly more popular in Europe than in the United States, where joints and blunts dominate.

Spliff FAQ

What is the difference between a spliff and a joint?

A joint contains only cannabis rolled in papers. A spliff contains a mixture of cannabis AND loose tobacco rolled in papers. The tobacco in a spliff adds a nicotine buzz, changes the flavor, and makes the cannabis last longer. In the US, 'joint' means cannabis only; in some European countries, 'joint' can mean a spliff.

Why do people smoke spliffs?

People smoke spliffs to: make their cannabis supply last longer, enjoy the combined effects of cannabis and nicotine, get a smoother burn (tobacco burns more evenly than cannabis alone), and experience a different flavor profile. Spliffs are especially common in countries where cannabis is expensive.
