Cannabis has one of the most distinctive and recognizable smells in the plant world. The aroma comes from terpenes — aromatic compounds that give each strain its unique scent profile. Common cannabis aromas include skunky and pungent (the classic 'weed smell'), earthy and pine, citrus and lemon, sweet and fruity, diesel and fuel, floral and lavender, and cheesy or funky. The intensity of the smell varies by strain, with some strains being nearly odorless and others filling entire rooms. When burned, cannabis produces a distinctive smoke smell that lingers on clothes, hair, and in rooms.

What Does Weed Smell Like FAQ

Why does weed smell skunky?

The skunky smell in cannabis comes from a group of sulfur-containing compounds called volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), specifically prenylthiol (VSC3). These compounds are chemically similar to the defensive spray of skunks. Not all strains are skunky — many modern strains are bred for fruity, sweet, or diesel aromas instead.

How do you get rid of weed smell?

To reduce cannabis smoke smell: ventilate the room immediately, use air freshener or odor-neutralizing spray, burn a candle or incense, use a sploof (exhale through a tube stuffed with dryer sheets), or smoke outside. For clothes and hair: change clothes, wash hands, use body spray. For the most discreet consumption, use vapes, edibles, or drinks — they produce minimal odor.
