Trichomes are the tiny, mushroom-shaped resin glands that cover the surface of cannabis flowers, leaves, and stems. They appear as a frosty, crystal-like coating on high-quality cannabis buds. Trichomes are where the plant produces and stores its cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, etc.), terpenes (aromatic compounds), and flavonoids. They are essentially the chemical factories of the cannabis plant. When trichomes are separated and collected, they become kief. When pressed, kief becomes hash. The amount and quality of trichomes on a cannabis plant is a primary indicator of potency.

Trichomes FAQ

Why are trichomes important?

Trichomes are important because they contain all of the cannabinoids (THC, CBD) and terpenes that produce cannabis effects and flavors. A plant with more trichomes generally produces more potent, flavorful buds. Trichome density is one of the key quality indicators that budtenders and consumers look for.

What color should trichomes be?

Trichome color indicates maturity: clear/transparent means the plant is not ready for harvest. Milky/cloudy white means peak THC production — most growers harvest when 70-80% of trichomes are milky. Amber/brown means THC is degrading into CBN (a sedating cannabinoid). More amber = more sedating effects.
